Coby Gipson, Lamar University’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, is entering his fifth season with the program. Named the 2022-2023 FCA Southeast Texas Coach of the Year, Gipson helped develop one of the Southland Conference’s top young receiving corps. Despite losing star receiver Sevonne Rhea to injury for most of the season, the Cardinals still recorded 2,056 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. Rhea’s return was pivotal, highlighted by a two-touchdown performance in an upset win over Southeastern Louisiana.
Before Lamar, Gipson was East Texas Baptist’s defensive line coach, leading a unit that registered 82 tackles for loss in 2019. He also served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Howard Payne and had successful stints at Bishop T.K. Gorman and Grace Community High School in Tyler, Texas. A graduate of LeTourneau University with a master’s from Concordia-Irvine, Gipson lives with his wife, Christy, and their three children: Camryn, Connor, and Cassen.
