Scotty Walden, a Texas native and one of college football’s most dynamic young coaches, was named UTEP’s 27th head coach on Dec. 4, 2023. Walden, 34, brings a proven track record of success, having spent four seasons at Austin Peay, where he led the Governors to a 26-14 record, two conference titles, and their first undefeated conference season in 2023. Known for his fast-paced, high-scoring offenses and strong defensive units, Walden’s teams set numerous school records and achieved national rankings in both offensive and defensive categories.
Before Austin Peay, Walden served as interim head coach at Southern Miss, where he developed NFL wide receiver Quez Watkins. At East Texas Baptist, he became the NCAA’s youngest head coach at age 26, leading the nation’s top-scoring offense and breaking multiple school records. With a fearless, fast, and physical style, Walden is excited to lead UTEP into a new era. “We’re committed to building a football program El Paso can be proud of both on and off the field,” Walden said.
